Arturo E. Betancourt, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Betancourt earned his undergraduate
and medical degrees with honors at the University of Puerto Rico.
He interned at the Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco
and began his ophthalmology residency in 1983 at the Walter Reed
Medical Center in Washington, D.C.. Prior to joining the Baltimore
Washington Eye Center, Dr. Betancourt served as a flight surgeon
in the Middle East and practiced ophthalmology at the William
Beaumont Army Medical Center, gaining extensive experience in
cataract and implant surgery, laser therapy for retinal disease,
and glaucoma treatment. Since joining B W Eye in 1988, Dr.
Betancourt has ensured that his cataract surgery skills and techniques
have kept pace with the latest advances in this procedure.
During this same period he has received additional training and
gained experience in refractive surgery.
Dr. Betancourt is an assistant
clinical professor at the University of Maryland and at the Uniformed
Services, University of Health Sciences. He is a diplomate
of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and the American College
of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Society of Cataract
and Refractive Surgery and the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty
of Maryland.
Dr. Betancourt is the President
and Medical Director of the Baltimore Washington Eye Center.

Brad V. Spagnolo, M.D.
Dr. Spagnolo earned his undergraduate
degree from George Washington University and his medical degree
from Temple University. His three-year ophthalmology residency
program was at the George Washington University Medical Center.
Dr. Spagnolo joined B W Eye after completing a Fellowship in
corneal disease at the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, Michigan,
under the direction of Dr. Jayne S. Weiss. As a result of
his training during his ophthalmology residency and subsequently
during his fellowship at the Kresge Eye Institute, Dr. Spagnolo
has gained extensive experience in corneal transplantation, laser
vision correction surgery, and cataract surgery with lens implantation.
Dr. Spagnolo is a diplomate of
the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American
Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and
Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive
Surgery.

Shari E. Strier, O.D.
Dr. Shari Strier received her
undergraduate degree with honors from Tulane University and earned
her Doctor of Optometry degree from the State University of New
York College of Optometry, graduating first in her class.
Dr. Strier completed her residency
training at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Baltimore.
At the VAMC, her training emphasized the diagnosis and therapeutic
management of ocular diseases, pre- and post-operative
management of cataract, glaucoma and retinal surgeries.
Since joining B W Eye in 1997
as Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Strier's clinical responsibilities
include routine eye care for patients of all ages, evaluation
and management of chronic and acute eye diseases (including diabetic
eye disease, macular degeneration and glaucoma), and fitting
of routine and specialty contact lenses.
Dr. Strier is a member of the
American Optometric Association and is a candidate for Fellowship
in the American Academy of Optometry. She has also been
appointed by the Governor of Maryland to sit on the Quality Enhancement
and Insurance Committee for the Board of Examiners in Optometry.
